Original, matching numbers, low mileage, right-hand drive UK car. Bearing matching chassis and engine number 19225, this early 308 GTB is a rare, right-hand drive, glass fibre car.

The car was originally finished in Nuovo Giallo Fly with a black leather interior and has remained this way until the present day.

Introducing the Ferrari 308 GTB Vetroresina

The 308 is regarded by many as one of Ferrari‘s greatest production and styling triumphs. The original 308 GTB released in 1975 is the first production Ferrari to have a fibreglass body, excluding the bonnet which is aluminium.

The 308 GTB is the direct successor to the Dino 246 GT and enthusiasts of that model praise the air intakes, double tail-lights and concave rear window that are reminiscent of the predecessor.

The entire body is made of fibreglass; the main reason for this was because sales of the 308 GT4 Dino, which was presented two years earlier, were somewhat disappointing and Ferrari wanted to speed up the launch of the 246 successors.

It is faster and easier to make moulds for fibreglass structures than metal press moulds, in addition, Lotus has been successfully reducing the weight of their production sports cars for years using fibreglass bodies.

In short: in 1975, the fibreglass 308 GTB was at the Paris Motor Show earlier than planned.

Built to a Pininfarina design by Scaglietti, it retained the 308 GT4′s V8, albeit with dry sump lubrication. The latter made for lower engine mounting and better-cooling thanks to the fact that more oil was present.

The 308 GTB Vetroresina was built for barely two years, with only about 800 units produced as a result. In 1977 Ferrari started production of the steel 308 GTB and the Vetroresina was seen as an inferior version for decades.

The 308 Vetroresina built at Carrozzeria Scaglietti has now become ‘the one to have’, with its lighter weight (1,050 kg versus 1,200 kg), the great carburettor engine and low production numbers.

Vehicle History & Information

The car was built by Ferrari and imported into the UK by Maranello Concessionaires.

In June 1976, it was supplied by main dealers HR Owen of Berkeley Street to the first owner, Sir Hugh Fraser, of House of Fraser, in July 1978 the car was sold to Tim Randles and remained in the ownership of Tim Randles, Joshua Randles, and Randles Garages until August 2008, when it moved to Classic Restorations of Milton Keynes, where it remained until 2012 when it was acquired for the collection of the previous owner.

At that time, the intention was to convert the car to race specification for competition in the Pirelli Ferrari Classic series, and was entrusted to a Ferrari specialist for preparation. Although they had known of the car for a long time, it was only when the covers came off that it was recognised just how rare the original car was; far too desirable to be converted into a racing car!

In May 2012 work began on a rather different job – the painstaking re-awakening of 19225. That program of works respected the rare originality of the car and included the sympathetic carrying out of all that could be wished for to bring the car to perfect condition.

In the meantime, the owner had another fibreglass 308 GTB prepared as a race car and his collection had expanded to the extent that there was no more garage space at home.
It was time then for the newly prepared car to move to the care of a new custodian.

It was purchased by a private collector who kept the car for 6 years and only drove it approximately 100 miles in that time.

The car was then purchased by its current owner who is also a private collector, who had the car serviced and belts changed just after purchasing it, he also changed the original brown carpets to new black carpets, which we think look considerably better.

Vehicle Summary

This early, low-mileage 308 GTB from the first year of production is in incredibly beautiful condition, the condition of the body looks fantastic, and only a few GTBs were delivered in this colour. Fits are as they should be with an early Vetroresina, something that indicates the absence of damage history.

The music comes from the wonderfully mechanical sounding 2.9 litre V8 with double overhead camshafts, and like the rest of the car, has had extensive maintenance by specialists and is therefore completely up to date.

The engine starts, revs, and runs as it should, the clutch is good, and the gearbox is very smooth through every gear with its typical Ferrari shift pattern.

The car was last serviced in January 2022 at SMDG Ferrari Specialists, where it had new belts fitted, also all new black carpets, and an interior refresh.

Unfortunately, the service books and other records have been misplaced, however, the car is well known to Ferrari garages, so it is very easy the verify that the 18,761 miles are genuine, and the car has been very well looked after in its life by trained Ferrari specialists
