The Citroën BX: A Brief History

Introduction

The Citroën BX was an innovative and successful car model produced by the French automaker Citroën between 1982 and 1994. The BX was designed to be a modern, practical, and comfortable vehicle with a unique blend of performance, fuel efficiency, and versatility. The car’s distinctive design, suspension system, and range of engine options helped it become a popular choice in Europe and beyond.

Design and Development

The Citroën BX was developed in the late 1970s to replace the ageing Citroën GS and GSA models. The project was internally known as “Project X” and later as “Project B,” eventually leading to the BX designation. The design was heavily influenced by Marcello Gandini, an Italian car designer famous for his work with Bertone, an Italian design and coachbuilding company.

Gandini’s angular and wedge-shaped design significantly differed from the rounded and curvy shapes of previous Citroën models. The BX featured a large glass area, plastic bumpers, and side cladding, providing a futuristic look. Its aerodynamic design helped reduce air resistance, improving fuel efficiency and performance.

Hydropneumatic Suspension

One of the most notable features of the Citroën BX was its hydropneumatic suspension system. This self-levelling system was a signature feature of Citroën vehicles, dating back to the DS model introduced in 1955. The hydropneumatic suspension provided an exceptionally comfortable ride, excellent handling, and the ability to adjust the ride height for various road conditions or loads.

Engine and Transmission Options

The Citroën BX had various engines, including petrol and diesel options. Early petrol engines ranged from a 1.1-litre to a 1.9-litre engine, while diesel options included a 1.7-litre and 1.9-litre engine. In 1984, Citroën introduced the BX GT, which featured a more powerful 1.9-litre engine, sport suspension, and sportier exterior design elements.

Throughout its production, the BX was offered different transmission options, including 4- and 5-speed manual gearboxes and a 3-speed automatic transmission.

Variants and Special Editions

The Citroën BX was available in various body styles, including a 5-door hatchback and a 5-door estate (station wagon) known as the BX Break. In 1985, Citroën introduced the BX 4TC, a limited-production, high-performance model designed for the Group B rally competition. The 4TC featured a turbocharged 2.2-litre engine and all-wheel drive, but due to limited success and the eventual cancellation of Group B, only around 200 units were produced.

Throughout its production run, Citroën released several special editions of the BX, such as the BX Sport, BX 16 Valve, and BX Digit. These models featured unique design elements, upgraded equipment, and in some cases, improved performance.

End of Production and Legacy

The Citroën BX was discontinued in 1994 after over a decade of production and over 2.3 million units sold. It was succeeded by the Citroën Xantia, which continued to use the hydropneumatic suspension system.

Today, the Citroën BX is considered a classic car, appreciated for its innovative design, comfortable ride, and unique driving experience provided by its hydropneumatic suspension. The BX remains a testament to Citroën’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of automotive design and technology.
