History of the iconic BMW E39

The BMW E39 is the fourth generation of the BMW 5 Series, a range of executive cars produced by the German automaker BMW. The E39 was in production from 1995 to 2003, and it played a crucial role in solidifying BMW’s reputation as a producer of luxury, performance-oriented vehicles. This model is often regarded as one of the best iterations of the 5 Series, thanks to its timeless design, impressive engineering, and overall driving experience.

Development and Design

The story of the E39 began in 1989 to create a vehicle that would build upon the success of its predecessor, the E34. The design team, led by Joji Nagashima, aimed to create a sleek and aerodynamic exterior while improving interior space and comfort. The E39’s design was finalised in 1992 and featured an elegant silhouette, sharp lines, and the iconic BMW kidney grille.

The E39 utilised lightweight materials like aluminium to reduce weight and improve handling. The chassis was engineered for increased rigidity, which resulted in better driving dynamics. The suspension system was also refined, providing a comfortable ride while maintaining excellent handling characteristics.

Engine and Performance

The E39 was offered a wide range of engine options, including petrol and diesel inline-six engines and V8 engines for higher-end models. The base model, the 520i, was powered by a 2.0-litre inline-six engine, while the top-of-the-line M5 featured a 4.9-litre V8 engine capable of producing 394 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. The M5 was the ultimate performance version of the E39 and is now considered a classic among BMW enthusiasts.

Transmission options for the E39 included a five-speed manual, a six-speed manual (introduced in 1999), and a five-speed automatic. The xDrive all-wheel-drive system, now standard on many BMW models, was unavailable for the E39.

Interior and Technology

The interior of the E39 was designed with driver comfort and ergonomics in mind. The dashboard was slightly angled towards the driver, making accessing controls and reading gauges easier. High-quality materials, such as wood trim and leather upholstery, were used throughout the cabin, giving the E39 a luxurious feel.

BMW also emphasised technology in the E39. The car featured numerous innovations for its time, including an optional navigation system, a sophisticated climate control system, and an available in-car telephone. Safety features such as anti-lock brakes, traction control, and multiple airbags were standard on all E39 models.

The BMW E39 is remembered as one of the finest 5 Series models ever produced, offering a perfect balance of luxury, performance, and timeless design. Its refined ride, engaging driving dynamics, and advanced technology made it a benchmark in the executive car segment.

The E39 was replaced by the E60 5 Series in 2003, but its legacy lives on in the hearts of enthusiasts and collectors worldwide. The E39’s impact on BMW’s brand and reputation cannot be understated, as it helped solidify its position as a premier manufacturer of luxury performance vehicles.
